What Is EMDR & Specifically, EMDR For Kids?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-supported therapy and one of the top trauma treatments recommended by the World Health Organization. It helps children work through difficult experiences in a way that supports their mind, body, and heart.

What makes EMDR different is something called bilateral stimulation—this might be eye movements, tapping, or sounds that go back and forth. While your child focuses gently on a memory, the back-and-forth movement helps the brain do its healing work.

With a trained child EMDR therapist, kids can move through tough memories without feeling so overwhelmed.

FAQs About EMDR For Kids & Parents

What is EMDR, and how does it help kids?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a therapy that helps kids work through tough memories, big emotions, and scary experiences in a way that feels natural and safe. By using eye movements, tapping, or sounds, EMDR helps the brain sort through tricky feelings so they don’t feel as overwhelming. It’s like giving their mind a way to clean up and reorganize messy thoughts!

Not in the way you might think! EMDR doesn’t require kids to replay every detail of a difficult experience. Instead, they focus on their feelings and thoughts while doing gentle EMDR exercises—like watching a moving object, tapping their hands, or following sounds. This process helps their brain work through emotions without needing to talk about everything in detail.

EMDR for kids is creative and playful! Therapists use games, stories, drawings, and even characters like Eyesac & Eyela, the EMDR twins, to help kids feel comfortable. A session might include talking about safe places, practicing calming exercises, or using movement and imagination to process feelings. It’s all about making EMDR feel fun, engaging, and stress-free!

Every child’s journey is different, but over time, you might notice your child feels less anxious, more confident, and better able to handle big emotions. Maybe they have fewer nightmares, worry less, or seem calmer in tough situations. EMDR helps kids process what’s been bothering them, so they can move forward feeling lighter, stronger, and more in control.

You don’t have to be an expert—just being there makes a huge difference! You can help by practicing calming exercises together, encouraging play and creativity, and reassuring them that it’s okay to have big feelings. EMDR For Kids also has videos, worksheets, and activities to help you and your child feel supported every step of the way.
